For over 20 years, The Better Cheddar has been offering its wide selection of cheese and other gourmet delicacies to customers from all over the Midwest. We are excited that we are now able to reach out to those who may not get a chance to stop in one of our two locations in the Kansas City area.
To give you a bit of history, Ron Shalinsky purchased a small cheese and sandwich shop in Kansas City in 1983 and turned it into THE destination for gourmet food items in Kansas City as well as the largest selection of cheese in at least the four-state area. In 1986, Ron opened a second store just across the border in Prairie Village, Kansas. It has been estimated that The Better Cheddar offers about 4,000 items, so we hope you will enjoy browsing our shelves, either in the store or on our website. The NASFT (National Association of the Specialty Food Trade) honored The Better Cheddar in 2003 by recognizing it as one of the Top 5 Specialty Food Retailers in the US. Of course we can't offer all of our fabulous items on the website, so we have picked a generous selection of our favorites, and will continue to add to them as we get in new and exciting products.
With one of the largest collections of artisanal American cheeses in the country, we are a strong supporter of the many old and new American producers. We are dedicated to educating the public about cheese and other gourmet topics, so check in with us to see what information we can share with you, both on our website and in the stores. Welcome and enjoy your visit! -- The Staff at The Better Cheddar

AT HOME &
IN OUR STORES
Celebrate the best of the spring season with fresh cheese! Cheeses do have seasons. The best season for making most
cheeses is late summer and early fall. This is when the pastures that the
animal is grazing on are plentiful with flowers, herbs and clover. The best
cheese for spring is very fresh cheeses as opposed to aged cheese.
Stop by either of our two locations and find your favorites.
We have many tempting cheeses to choose from such as a Honey Goat cheese from
Belgium which has a delightful burst of sweetness that tempers the tanginess
that is inherent in most goat cheese.
Another goat cheese you might want to try is Bucheron, which
comes from the Loire Valley in France. Or maybe you will find
Pierre Robert, the buttery, mild cheese from the Champagne region of France more to
your liking. Whatever the case, we certainly have enough cheeses for you to
find your favorites. We look forward to seeing you in our stores.
Remember that the Plaza store has a wine tasting every
Saturday from 2-4 pm.
